About Ojai

Ojai Valley

Ojai, a Native America name generally accepted as meaning either “the nest” or “the moon,” was home to the Chumash Indians who found sanctuary in its canyons, mountains and unique east east-west orientation, revering it as a place of healing. Today, the Ojai Valley is a haven for writers, photographers, artists, composers, and spiritual seekers who find inspiration in Ojai’s serene beauty. It is also home to a thriving arts community and boasts of world-renowned artists, downtown galleries, and numerous art-centric festivals. A charming historic Spanish-style town of 8,000 residents, Ojai is 14 miles from the Pacific Ocean, 35 miles south of Santa Barbara and 73 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

Thoughts on Ojai by Ojai WordFest Co-Founders

BRET BRADIGAN:

“Ojai is a place that is unhurried, thoughtful, active and inspiring. Ojai deserves to be represented with excellence and a restless spirit of inquiry. This is what we hope to achieve at Ojai Quarterly. People have a sense about Ojai as a Shangri-La, a place apart, shimmering with possibilities for living life to its fullest. My publication is a reflection and a reminder of that abiding principle.” – Bret Bradigan, publisher of Ojai Quarterly

SEQUOIA HAMILTON:

“People have numerous and passionate reasons why they love Ojai: ‘pink moment’ sunsets, artists’ enclave, spiritual vortex, quaint small town, world-class hotels, spas and cuisine, Ojai Trolley, commitment to green living, slower pace of life, hugs every time you get out and about, the free range chickens who run on Lomita and later gift the community with fresh eggs, the roadside fruit and vegetable stands with their “honor system” method of payment, hiking in the Ventura river bottom and along Ojai’s numerous trails, the close-knit community and the Norman Rockwell-esque community festivals. Ojai’s charms are many.
